1880

A sweet little crib-size quilt with charming appliqués that depict special  “scenes of childhood.” The adorable inked hands and faces bring the scenes to life and add lovability to the vignettes. Under each scene is a descriptive phrase inked in the original handwriting of the quilter (presumably!). The borders are scattered with simple coloring book type animals – a cat, dogs and a cow and colorful cornucopias grace the corners.

The pattern includes close-up color pictures of each scene to see embroidered and fabric details. In addition, placement diagrams are given for each vignette, along with a descriptive page of embroidery stitches for the clothing details, freezer paper templates for the scenes, a stencil to mark the larger appliqués and also the quilting stencil. As with all the patterns, both hand and machine instructions are given and historical information is also documented. Not only is this a heartwarming quilt to make, but would be a very special quilt for a very special gift!

Permawriter extra-fine permanent markers for the inked details are also available.

1850

Review of the new pattern

A remarkable quilt made by a teenager in approximately 1850! It's magnificent appeal is a result of the fabric choices and the skillfully executed sashings. The Compasses actually " float" atop the crisp, white background. A native Vermont quilt, it has been displayed at the Vermont Quilt Festival, and exhibited at its home base, the Shelburne Museum. It has also graced the cover of Plain and Fancy by Richard Cleveland and Donna Bister. Enjoy reading the history and learning how the original quilt was constructed.

The pattern includes instructions for hand piecing, machine piecing, freezer paper AND foundation techniques. A full pull-out pattern sheet is included with template shapes and the foundation patterns. Truly a technique for everyone! The quilting stencil taken directly from the 1850 quilt is also enclosed.
